At a glance

What the latest federal figures show.

The federal market is large, but the useful question is more specific: where are small businesses participating, and what do the current numbers actually mean? These figures distinguish direct awards from subcontracts and identify the source and date for every statistic, so they can be quoted with confidence.

“Prime contract” means an award made directly by a federal agency. A subcontract is work performed for a prime contractor. Fiscal year 2025 ran from October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2025.
